Brute News – New Year, New Brute Comic!

It’s been a long, long, wait but it’s soon to be over.  The moment we’ve all been awaiting for is coming soon.

I’m thrilled to announce that Brute #3 ‘The Price of Freedom’ is now art complete and well into the coloring (and final) phase.  I’m so excited to be able to share this issue with all of you soon.   It bring the story arch of Rose’s captivity to an action-packed and heart-warming conclusion.  But as the title suggests, Rose’s freedom comes with a price, one she’s not sure she can bare.

Some samples of the finished art:

PLUS… we learn more of what Vanguard and his crew are up to…

And discover the mystery of the being known as ‘Rintax’.

For this issue we’re going to try something special – we’re going to do a Kickstarter for it!

If you’re not familiar with Kickstarter, it’s a crowd funding platform that a lot of comic creators use to fund their comics nowadays, but more importantly, it’ll provide an opportunity to expose Brute to a MUCH larger audience.   If the Kickstarter goes well, we’re hoping to be able to provide future issues quicker and improved on it in everyway – but we’ll need your support to make it happen!

Our Kickstarter page isn’t ready to show just yet, but we’ll be sharing it with you soon.

In the meantime, our congratulations to our friends Shane Luttrell, Peter Welmerink and Steve Shipley on the success of their Silver and Steam Kickstarter campaign.   Brute, Suzie Steam and Silver all started out in the pages of YEET! Presents so we’re thrilled with their success with their first solo comic.

Keep your eyes peeled for more Brute news in the weeks ahead!

They Haunt Me

Whenever I do an interview, one of the most commonly asked questions is, “Why did you decide to write Brute?”

You’d think there would be some great succinct answer to that, which sums up 30 years of ideas, passions, hopes and dreams. An answer that’d immediately help the listener to grasp why I’d have such audacity to expose the world to these characters, themes and stories. But in truth, the answer is closer to, ‘I didn’t have a choice.”

Waaaayy back in the 90’s when I was coming up with storylines for the superhero RPGs I ran for my friends and brothers, I created the characters, or most of them anyway (Rose came earlier, some later), that now inhabit the ‘Bruteverse’. There was just something about Brute, this unassuming teddy-bear-like alien that could kick everyone’s a**, who was both confident and a touch cocky yet kind-hearted and understated that held a special place in my heart.

Of course so did Jerrreecko/Vanguard, Rintax, Rose and others. It was like they had such great stories, such interesting chemistry and such great personality flaws – at the same time annoying, yet easy to root for, that you want to see them succeed, despite their character flaws, or perhaps, because of them.

They wouldn’t leave me alone. For 30 years they were locked up in my head, bouncing around, demanding to be told. They haunted me, in a pleasant sort of way, but I just couldn’t forget about them as new and even more interesting insights about them were revealed. I just had to tell their story. I had too!

I made many attempts over the years, but none of them felt ‘right’. Starting the story with Brute, especially early Brute as we see him in the flashbacks in Issue #2 ‘Beauty and the Brute’, just didn’t work. Early Brute is just too much of a jerk! LOL. He’s a mess of anger, entitlement, bawdy behaviour and condescending attitude all covering up a huge lack of self-worth. He’s not someone you want to root for, despite being cute.

It wasn’t until I finally realized Brute is the ‘Fonz’ of the show – the beloved, cool, bad-boy of the show, but not the actual star. Ultimately, this is really Rose’s story. Rose has two huge advantages over her companion; One) She’s human, and so the reader can immediately identify with her, and discover this unique space epic’s universe through her eyes, and Two) She’s truly someone you can root for. She’s also battered and broken, but she’s both tough, yet compassionate. She’s the heart of the group, and the real star of the show.

Rose also has the added benefit of bring out the best qualities in Brute. She makes him want to be a better person than he’s been being. He instinctively realizes he desperately needs what she’s bringing to his life, and she needs him to survive in this dangerous galaxy. Plus, who wouldn’t love a bad boy teddy bear? Their chemistry is great, if explosive…

Brute’s insecurity about his own self-worth makes him react angrily if he’s made to feel like he’s somehow, ‘not good enough.’ Combine that with Rose’s lack of trust in people, after being abandoned as a child, robbed, conned and enslaved, and her (understandably) fiercely independent streak, and you’ve got a dangerous mix of two co-dependent people who both love, and at times, hate each other.

Digressing… how could I not tell this story? It’s the kind of messy, human, tragic love story that’ll never work, maybe, that everyone would be compelled to see how this turns out (do they get together or is it a train wreck?) wrapped in an epic space saga with all the action, adventure and fun that entails.

Clearly, I’m haunted. It won’t let me go. It’s a story I just have to tell.

Welcome along for the ride!

UPDATES:

I’ll be returning to the Barrie, ON area for the Barrie Comic Con this Sunday, September 11th.

Brute #3 ‘The Cost of Freedom’ is nearing completion, with the finished art 100% done, and finished inks almost 50%. It’s slower than we planned, but it’s definitely getting done.

We’ll be running a Kickstarter for Brute #3 to help cover print costs – and to help give it much broader exposure than we can doing conventions. So expect to see that in October or November. If it goes well enough, it’ll really help us to move to a much faster production schedule, and who knows what else that exposure could lead too?

Lastly, if you’ve the time and interest, I was interviewed recently on the ‘In Your Face’ show for a really indepth, if long, look into Brute. You can watch it here:

The Summer of Brute

Just finished putting some polish onto the script for Brute #4 and, wow, is it a fun issue with our first in-depth episode with Captain Jeerrrecko aka Vanguard and his crew of bounty hunters. Action! Suspense! Twists and turns! Laughs! Tragedy! When Vanguard’s perchance for impulsive action gets them in over their heads, can he find a way to save them all, and still capture their bounty? You’ll have to wait to see. As for Rose and Brute… well, first they need to survive Jorj and his three gigantic henchmen in Brute #3 (see sneak peek image below).

Speaking of Brute #3 – Owen continues to deliver amazing page after page! I can’t wait for you guys to see what he’s come up with for you. Owen manages to really capture the heart and soul of the characters while filling the pages with all out action and drama as Rose and Brute fight for her freedom and his life. You won’t be able to put this book down until you’ve read every last page. The sometimes tragic story we had to call the ‘Price of Freedom’.

In case you missed the news, we’ve gotten restock of Brute #0-#2 thanks to the wonderful folks at Studio Comix Press and they look amazing! Great quality with bright colors that make the art pop.

So if you’re not yet caught up, you can now purchase print (and digital) copies of Brute #0-#2 (and pre-order #3 but we’re not guaranteeing any date yet) from our store at: brutecomic.com/shop. All issues are shipped with board/bag in padded envelope to get to you securely.

If you’re in Ontario – our convention tour continues in July:
July 10 – Niagara Falls (popculturecanada.ca)
July 23 – Orillia (cottagecountrycomiccon.com)
August 20th – Collingwood (popculturecanada.ca)
September 11th – Barrie (popculturecanada.ca)

It’s going to be an exciting summer season! More news soon. In the meantime enjoy the splash page for Brute #3 now beautifully coloured by the amazingly talented Brooke Newhart!

Conventions, Contests, and Convenience

Hi guys and gals,

I’m back with some more Brute news. But first, we need a better way to address our fans than ‘guys and gals’, like ‘true believers’ or bieblievers (or not at all like that), or Brutes and Babes… Okay, that’s terrible… Please suggest a great, fun name for all our followers. Best suggestion will get a signed Brute poster mailed out to them.

Terrific news – pencil art for Brute #3 is now almost complete and we’re moving into lettering/inking/coloring stages now.  Each issue has been an improvement on the last and this one is no exception. If we’re taking longer than before, once you see it you’ll know why!

Also, for all of you who purchased a single issue of Brute at a convention, or purchased a digital copy online and want to get the rest of the series in print – wait no longer! Now that I’ve adequate supply, I’ve made print copies available via our website: brutecomic.com/shop for both Canadians and Americans (note all prices are in Canadian dollars so if you’re in the States figure it’s about 25% cheaper than the price you’re seeing). All copies will be in bag with board and mailed in a padded envelope.

My comic con tour continues – last Sunday I was in Stratford (Justin Bieber’s hometown), ON. It’s a beautiful town and well known for it’s Shakespearian theatre – so my lovely wife and I took in some culture while we were there and saw Chicago (the musical – okay, so not that much culture…). Pics below.

Upcoming appearances:
Bolton – June 18th
Scarborough – June 19th
Niagara Falls (Canada) – July 10th
Oshawa – July 16th
Peterborough – July 17th
Orillia – July 23rd – and reunited with my mentor, Richard Comely of Captain Canuck fame.

It’s great fun meeting fans (and future fans) at the conventions and spreading the word about Brute! Hope to meet some of you on my travels. Pictured below is me talking with Ryan Poirier of accidentalcreations.ca – Creator of ‘The Herd’ and ‘Farm Freaks’ (all ages comics).

Interview and Sneak Peek at Brute #3

by Preston Squire on May 28, 2022 at 10:09 am

Having run out of our first print run of Brute #1, and having five more conventions booked (and more pending) I just picked up our 2nd printing of our first three comics (Brute #0-#2).

So guess what?  If you have a 1st print edition – it’s now worth more money!  At least theoretically…  It’s our goal to ensure those first run comics are worth thousands of dollars decades from now – so…

While I was there at StudioComix, we did this fun little interview:

Lastly, Issue #3 is progressing nicely. The artwork is about 90% done at this point. Being an all-action comic as our heroes fight for Rose’s freedom, this is unlike any issue of Brute you’ve seen before.
